A Systems Approach to Strategic Planning

Service Description

Whether you are embarking on a strategic planning process for the first time or if you are a seasoned planner, applying a systems thinking approach will help at all stages of the process. All too often, the plans designed to guide an organization for 3-to-5 years become stale and ceases to serve as a North-star for the people it was meant to guide. We believe that by instilling a systems thinking approach, and that by applying the Habits of a Systems Thinker and associated systems thinking tools, strategic planning can be an engaging exercise, a way to break down organizational silos, and a vehicle to drive organizational change and adaptability.

Outcomes: Participants will be able to:

  1. Gain a deeper understanding of how to effectively apply systems thinking to strategic planning, ensuring their plans remain relevant and actionable over the long term.
  2. Break down organizational silos to foster a more integrated and collaborative environment within your organization.
  3. Develop the ability to use systems thinking tools to drive and manage change within the organization, making them more adaptable to evolving circumstances and creating structures that align with organizational values.
  4. Make strategic planning an engaging and inclusive exercise, involving various stakeholders and ensuring that the planning process is dynamic and participatory.
  5. Apply the Habits of a Systems Thinker to create strategic plans that serve as a consistent North-star for their organizations, providing ongoing guidance and direction.

Structure:

  • Design team meeting of 3 - 5 people who represent leadership at multiple levels (½ day) where we will review perspectives about current conditions, establish desired outcomes and surface any other information that would contribute to a customized plan.
  • It is recommended that participant cohort represent diverse role and responsibilities throughout the organization.
  • Full or half day sessions - 2 (full day) - 4 (half day) scheduled with time in between for practice and application.
  • Suggested follow-up include executive coaching and/or implementation support.
