Competing for Students in Times of Choice

Service Description

As families consider options in states that offer school choice and vouchers, a competitive landscape emerges making it challenging for schools and districts to attract, retain and maintain enrollment numbers. Systems thinking Habits and tools can help school and district teams develop strategies that support desired enrollment trends. We work with you to create plans, engage stakeholders, design and implement systems of support for families, and evaluate your progress.

Outcomes: Participants will be able to:

  1. Use the Habits of a Systems Thinker to increase understanding of this challenge.
  2. Use systems thinking tools to capture past, current and desired enrollment trends.
  3. Apply systems thinking Habits and tools to the development of an internal focus on school practices that attract and retain students and explore reasons why some students leave.
  4. Utilize systems thinking tools to develop a visual map of the current system to help visualize and identify potential leverage actions that will help retain and recruit new students.
  5. Use the developed visual systems map and potential leverage actions to make a plan that results in specific steps to generate desired enrollment trends.

Structure:

  • Design team meeting of 3 - 5 people who represent leadership at multiple levels (½ day) where we will review data and current conditions, establish desired outcomes and surface any other information that would contribute to a customized plan.
  • It is recommended that participant cohort represent diverse role and responsibilities throughout the school or district organization.
  • Full or half day sessions - 2-3 (full days) or 4-6 (half days) scheduled with time in between for practice and application.
