Borton Magnet School:
Borton Magnet School, part of the Tucson Unified School District, serves students in preschool through fifth grade, with special emphasis on project-based learning, systems thinking, literature, fine arts, and outdoor learning.
Desired Outcomes and Project Goals:
- Increase student engagement
- Promote critical thinking
- Make thinking visible, and provide students with tools to better communicate orally and in writing.
Since 2004, Borton has been consistently building its capacity in applying the Habits and tools of systems thinking (ST). During that time, they have expanded from PreK-2nd to PreK-5th and enjoy growing enrollment. The school’s commitment to ST work has remained strong through five different principals and a host of organizational changes at the district level. Systems thinking is evident in student work found in classrooms, hallways and even in the school garden, which focuses on sustainability. In 2017 Borton achieved the distinction of becoming a Magnet School of Excellence.
